Studio portrait of 2779A Private (Pte) William Stanley Prior, 32nd Battalion. A farm labourer from Julia, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 5th Reinforcements from Adelaide aboard HMAT Shropshire for on 25 March 1916 for Suez. Pte Prior was then transferred to the 8th Training Battalion in England during August 1916 before joining the 32nd Battalion on the Western Front near St Quentin, France, in late November 1916. Pte Prior was appointed a Lance Corporal in early June 1918 and then promoted to Temporary Corporal (Cpl) later that month. Cpl Prior was killed in action near Corbie, France, on 30 July 1918. He has no known grave and he is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial. He was aged 25 years.
