Studio portrait of 3956 Private (Pte) Walter James Webb, 10th Battalion. A driver from Mannum, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 12th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 2 December 1915 aboard RMS Malwa for Suez. He was hospitalised for two months with illness and on 18 May 1916 he was transferred to the 50th Battalion which relocated to the Western Front, France during June 1916. Pte Webb was reported missing in action at Mouquet Farm on 16 August 1916 and was subsequently determined to have been killed in action on that date and is buried in the Courcelette British Cemetery, France. He was aged 21 years.
