A memorial card incorporating a studio portrait of 1207, later 517, Sapper (Spr) Ernest Arthur McDonald, 2nd Field Company Engineers, of Yarragon, Vic. A bridge builder prior to enlisting in January 1915, Spr McDonald embarked from Melbourne with the 6th Reinforcements on board HMAT Berrima (A35) on 28 June 1915. He served at Gallipoli from August to December 1915, where he was allotted the service number 517. Spr McDonald arrived in France for service on the Western Front on 30 March 1916. In September and again in October 1917 he was recommended for the Military Medal. In October 1917 he was promoted to Lance Corporal (L/Cpl). On the 24th he was wounded in action in Belgium and died of his wounds on 31 October. L/Cpl McDonald was 24 years of age. In December 1917 L/Cpl McDonald was posthumously awarded the Military Medal.
