Studio portrait of 404614 Pilot Officer (PO) Lloyd Wilson Bailey, RAAF, of Grafton, NSW. A cadet journalist and university student in civilian life, PO Bailey enlisted on 11 October 1940. Whilst attached to 149 Squadron RAF he was killed during operations over Germany on 10 March 1942, aged 22. Their mission had been to attack the Essen railway lines near the massive Krupps factory in the heavily defended Ruhr Valley. Bailey was the pilot of a Short Stirling MkI bomber, serial N6126, coded OJ-U at the time of his death. He is buried in Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Germany with his epitaph reading 'WE CHERISH HIS DEAR MEMORY'.
