Description
Studio portrait of 470 Private Philip James Ball, C Company, 44th Battalion, of South Fremantle, WA (originally of Birmingham, England). A farmer prior to enlistment he embarked from Fremantle, WA, on board HMAT Suevic (A29) on 6 June 1916. Ball was awarded a Military Medal for bravery in the field on 24 July 1917. After a series of promotions he reached the rank of Sergeant (Sgt) in January 1918. Sgt Ball was reported missing and killed in action on 28 March 1918, aged 21. He is buried at the Villers-Bretonneux Military Cemetery, Fouilloy, France.
