Studio portrait of 2116 Private (Pte) Albert John Marner, 39th Battalion, of Wirrabars, SA. A farmer prior to enlistment he embarked with the 3rd Reinforcements on HMAT Achises (A68) on 28 August 1916. Pte Marner was awarded the Military Medal for gallantry in the capture of a German machine gun at Clery sur Somme on 31 August 1918. A few weeks later he was killed in action on 1 October 1918, aged 28.
