Sweetheart colour patch brooch for 20 Light Horse Regiment (20 Australian Motor Regiment) : Miss May Lindner
Sweetheart colour patch brooch for the 20th Light Horse Regiment (Victorian Mounted Rifles) or 20 Australian Motor Regiment, in the form of a miniature rectangular felt colour patch divided diagonally purple over yellow, held within a gold coloured metal frame bearing the Rising Sun badge at the top. Three chain links are attached to the top of the badge, connected to a horizontal suspension bar with brooch pin back. The front of the colour patch is protected with a layer of clear celluloid; the back with a band of grey felt.
This brooch was given to Miss May Joan Lindner, of Albury, New South Wales by her brother, V104454 Trooper Alton Leslie Lindner. at the time, Trooper Lindner was serving in 20 Light Horse Regiment (Victorian Mounted Rifles), which was later known as the 20th Australian Motor Regiment between 1941 and 1942. The latter name was retained after June 1942, but the unit's colour patch design was changed.
Trooper Lindner enlisted from Walla Walla, NSW, on 25 June 1941. He was discharged on 26 October 1942 to join the RAAF, where he was commissioned and served as a flying officer.
In 1944, May Lindner married Otto Joseph Richter, who had served with 2/26 Battalion in Singpore in 1941. He returned to Australia and discharged in January 1942, as a result of severe asthma, before the fall of Singapore to the Japanese.
