Studio portrait of 7579 Sergeant (Sgt) Edward George Spencer, student, of Dartmoor, Victoria. He enlisted for the first time as 452 Trooper (Tpr) Spencer with the 8th Light Horse Regiment and embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Star of Victoria on 25 February 1915 for Gallipoli. He was wounded in action on 30 June 1915 and was evacuated to Alexandria where he was promoted to Corporal. He was subsequently evacuated to England and then to Australia where he was discharged on 24 May 1916. Edward George Spencer re-enlisted in the 8th Battalion in Melbourne on 16 February 1917 with the substantive rank of Sergeant. He embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Nestor on 21 November 1917 for Southampton, England and then to France where he joined his unit on 4 May 1918. Sgt Spencer was wounded in action on 7 June 1918 and died of these wounds on the following day in the 15th Casualty Clearing Station near St Omer, France. He was aged 28 years.
