Studio portrait of 616 Private (Pte) Frederick Allan McMurtrie, farmer, of Lake Boga, Victoria. He enlisted in the 38th Battalion on17 February 1916 and embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Runic on 20 June 1916 for Plymouth, England. He embarked for the Western Front, France, on 22 November 1916 and, on arrival, was hospitalised due to illness. Consequently he did not join his unit in the field until 11 February 1917. Pte McMurtrie was killed in action near Ypres, Belgium, on 13 October 1917. He was aged 29 years. This image is one from a poster produced at Donald, Victoria, commemorating the deaths of soldiers associated with Donald and surrounding district during the First World War. The poster is held at P08261.001.
