Studio portrait of 2646 Sergeant (Sgt) Lawrence Stewart Muir, blacksmith, of Northam, Western Australia (originally of Donald, Victoria). He enlisted in the 11th Battalion on 3 June 1915 and embarked from Fremantle aboard HMAT Anchises on 2 September 1915 for Egypt. While in Egypt, he was transferred to the 51st Battalion on 1 March 1916 and promoted to Corporal on 6 March 1916 and then to Sergeant eight days later. The 51st Battalion relocated to the Western Front, France, in June 1916. Sgt Muir was killed in action at Mouquet Farm on 2 September 1916 aged 34 years. He has no known grave and his death is recorded on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France. This image is one from a poster produced at Donald, Victoria, commemorating the deaths of soldiers associated with Donald and surrounding district during the First World War.
