Description
Street portrait of 16853 Able Seaman (AB) Harold Needham Ireland, HMAS Canberra. Ireland, originally of St Annes on Sea, England, enlisted on 12 August 1925. He was serving at HMAS Cerberus at the outbreak of the Second World War and joined HMAS Canberra on 4 June 1940. He was promoted to the rank of Petty Officer on 1 February 1942. He was aboard the ship on 9 August 1942 when it was attacked and sunk by the Japanese Eighth Fleet during the Battle of Savo Island. AB Ireland was then transferred to HMAS Penguin II, and continued to serve on a number of ships, until he was discharged as medically unfit on 10 December 1945.
