Studio portrait of 3705 Temporary Bombardier (T/Bdr) Laurence Oliver Bryant, AIF, and his brother Sergeant Arthur Alfred Bryant, British Territorial Army (served with the 20th London Regiment and Second Lieutenant 21st Royal Berkshire Regiment, MC). Laurence Bryant arrived in Australia from England in 1913 and enlisted in the 8th Battalion in July 1915. He served with several artillery units and rose to the rank of Bombardier. Laurence Bryant was designated medically unfit due to military service and he departed from England in August 1918, arriving in Australia on 11 October. He died on 27 October 1918, aged 22. Arthur Bryant was wounded three times and won the Military Medal (MM) before being promoted to the rank of Second Lieutenant (2nd Lt). He immigrated to Australia in 1920 and, lying about his age, enlisted in the 2nd AIF in 1940. He fought with the 2/8 Battalion, rose to the rank of Captain, and became a prisoner of war in Crete. VX342 Captain Arthur Bryant survived the war and was discharged in January 1946.
