Studio portrait of WX15303 Corporal (Cpl) James Arthur Merrick, 2/11 Battalion, of Port Hedland, WA. Cpl Merrick was a repairer of railways prior to enlisting on 23 July 1941. Between September 1941 and January 1942 the 2/11 Battalion was part of the garrison in Syria. They returned to Australia in March 1942 to serve in the defence of Western Australia and Northern Queensland. In November 1944 the battalion was sent to New Guinea. Cpl Merrick was killed in action at Aitape, New Guinea, on 29 December 1944. He was 33 years of age. Cpl Merrick's brother WX750 Pte Reginald Victor Merrick , Headquarters 19 Brigade, was killed in action in Crete on 28 May 1941, aged 27 years.
