Folder 1 of 2 consists of one flying log book of Flight Lieutenant Nowland, containing entries dated between 10 January 1941 and 12 January 1945. It covers the period of Flight Lieutenant Nowland’s training in Australia and the United Kingdom, and service with 84 Squadron and 1579 Calibration Flight in South-East Asia. The entries record details such as dates and times of flights, aircraft types and numbers, other crewmembers, purposes of flights, and additional notes. Some of the purposes of flights include elementary flying training, service flying training, operational training, aircraft conversion, aircraft tests, transport of supplies and personnel, air fighting training, bombing operations targeting Japanese positions in Burma and Thailand, equipment calibration, and cooperative exercises with the Army.

Flight Lieutenant Raymond Waller Nowland enlisted to the Royal Australian Air Force on 11 November 1940. He undertook his flying training in Western Australia, and went on to complete his operation training in the United Kingdom. Flight Lieutenant Nowland went on to serve as a pilot with 84 Squadron, based in India. With his squadron, Flight Lieutenant Nowland participated in aerial operations targeting Japanese positions in Burma and Thailand. He was also attached to 1579 Calibration Flight for several months. Flight Lieutenant Nowland was discharged on 15 January 1946.
