Fundraising badge : Gallipoli - In Memory of an Anzac 1919
Description
Circular pressed tinplate badge with a celluloid face and a pin attachment to the reverse. A white grave cross, overlaid by a green wreath and crossed cavalry sword and rifle, is labelled 'In Memory of AN ANZAC 1919'. The title 'Gallipoli April 25, 1915' appears at the top, all against a light blue background.
History / Summary
Fundraising badge produced to commemorate Anzac Day 1919. Such badges were sold in trams, buses, at railways stations and at rallies to raise money for the stated cause. This example, using the words 'In Memory of an Anzac' allowed the buyer to commemorate their own personal loss of 'an Anzac'. The early Anzac Days were alternatively known as 'Gallipoli Day' until the early 1920s.
