Scrapbook leaf with four sketches and inscriptions; verso: Suvla Bay
Description
Scrapbook leaf with four sketches on separate sketchpad leaves and inscriptions, depicting some of the people aboard the SS Minnewaska while travelling from Alexandria to Lemnos Island; verso: Suvla Bay.
The third Minnewaska was launched in 1908 and sailed the London to New York route until 1915 when she was requisitioned by the British Army as a transportation vessel during the First World War. In 1916, she struck a mine in Souda Bay, Crete, in the Mediterranean sea. There were 1,800 troops on board. Badly damaged and beached, the vessel was written off as a total loss.
