Portrait of Lieutenant Harold Gilchrist, 6th Battalion, of Albert Park, Vic. Prior to enlistment, Harold Gilchrist was employed as a ledger keeper whilst also serving as a Lieutenant in the militia with the 48th Kooyong Cadet Battalion. He enlisted as 2474 Private Gilchrist in the AIF on 22 June 1915 and embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Demosthenes (A64) on 16 July 1915. He was quickly promoted, becoming Lance Sergeant at Gallipoli on 9 November 1915, then Sergeant in January 1916 and Lieutenant the following March. Lt Gilchrist was killed in action at the Battle of Broodseinde on 4 October 1917, aged 24, and has no known grave. His elder brother, Captain Robert Bruce Gilchrist also of the 6th Battalion (later transferring to the 58th Battalion) embarked from Melbourne with his brother and served at Gallipoli and the Western Front. Captain Robert Gilchrist survived the war and returned to Australia in 1918.
