Studio portrait of 1381 Private (Pte) Oliver William James, 4th Battalion, of Wickham, NSW. A horse driver before enlisting in October 1914, Pte James left Australia for Egypt with the 2nd Reinforcements in February 1915 for service in the Gallipoli campaign. He was wounded by shrapnel at Lone Pine in August 1915 and repatriated to Australia in December 1915. After recovering from his wounds, Pte James was posted to the AIF training camp at Liverpool for duty in the 2nd Military District, after which he embarked Australia for England in November 1916. Arriving in France for service on the Western Front in March 1917, Pte James was promoted to Lance Corporal (LCpl) after which he was admitted to the 6th General Hospital at Rouen, France, suffering from trench fever in June 1917. He died of pneumonia on 24 July 1917, aged 23.
