Sketch for 2008 Dawn Service commission
Description
The Australian War Memorial commissioned Kristin Headlam to attend the Dawn Service on 25 April 2008 to record this solemn and respectful ceremony. The age and number of people attending commemorative services has changed in recent years. The first Anzac Day commemorations at the memorial was in 1942 and, due to the fear of a Japanese air attach, was a small affair. In 1977 around 2,000 people attended the Memorial’s Dawn Service. Crowds continued to grow and 2015 saw a record 128,700 people attend the Dawn Service. The blurred masses depicted by Headlam give an indication as to the large quanitity of those present for the Dawn Service of 2008.
