Studio portrait of WX7249 Lance Sergeant (L Sgt) Maurice Plunkett, 2/28 Battalion, with his wife Barbara. A native of Hoffman Mill, WA, L Sgt Plunkett worked as a hospital secretary prior to enlisting on 1 August 1940. In early July 1942, L Sgt Plunkett moved with his battalion to the Alamein front in preparation for the 9th Division offensive. Commencing just after midnight on 27 July, the 2/28 attack on Ruin Ridge resulted in heavy losses for the battalion. L Sgt Plunkett was killed in action on the night of the battle, aged 41. Sixty-five officers and men from the battalion and its support units were killed or wounded; nearly 500 were captured and became prisoners of war. L Sgt Plunkett has no known grave, and his name is commemorated on column 91 of the Alamein Memorial, Egypt.
