Studio portrait of, left , 444 Private (Pte) Thomas Linton, 40th Battalion, of Nook, Tas. A dairy farmer prior to enlistment, Pte Linton embarked on board HMAT Berrima (A35) with the 40th Battalion on 1 July 1916. He served on the Western Front with the 51st Battalion from October 1916. On 31 March 1917, Pte Linton died of wounds received in action at Lagnicourt, France. On the same day his brother, 2932 Pte William Welsh Linton, also died at Lagnicourt. Right, 534 Pte William Robert Wells, 40th Battalion, of Scotsdale, Tas. An orchardist prior to enlisting in February 1916, Pte Wells also embarked from Hobart aboard HMAT Berrima on 1 July 1916. He was killed in action Armentieres, France, on 3 January 1917, aged 40.
