Studio portrait of 2882 Private (Pte) John William Barker Elshaw, 16th Battalion of Victoria Park, WA; formerly of Sheffield, England. A brass moulder prior to enlistment, Pte Elshaw embarked on aboard HMAT Hororata (A20) on 5 October 1915. He served with the 16th Battalion in the Middle East until March 1916 when he was transferred to the 48th Battalion. He served with the 48th Battalion on the Western Front and was twice wounded in action in France. Pte Elshaw was promoted to Lance Corporal (L/Cpl) in June 1917. On 1 July 1917 L/Cpl Elshaw was fatally wounded by a shell explosion in Ploegsteert Wood, Belgium. He was 25 years of age.
