Studio portrait of 28900 Gunner (Gnr) Francis Thomas Moody Sweeny, 2nd Medium Trench Mortar Battery, of Carrington, NSW. An engine fitter before enlisting in May 1916, Gnr Sweeny left Australia for England with the 2nd Reinforcements in September 1916, and arrived for service on the Western Front in April 1917. After transferring to the 5th Field Artillery Brigade in May 1917, Gnr Sweeny received a serious head wound at Larch Wood on 24 September 1917 and was repatriated to England to the Queen Mary's Military Hospital at Whalley, Lancashire. He succumbed to his wounds on the 21 October 1917, aged 32.
