Description
Studio portrait of Lieutenant (Lt) Malcolm Macfarlane, 56th (1st London) Division Engineers. Commissioned in the British Army in October 1915, Lt Macfarlane served the duration of the war on the Western Front and was awarded the Military Cross (MC) in 1918. Lt Macfarlane recovered a 6 pounder, 57mm Hotchkiss cartridge from a Mk IV Male tank whilst it was being retreived for repairs after breaking-down during the Battle of Flers-Courcelette on 15th September 1916. The shell is held by the Australian War Memorial at REL37319.001 and REL37319.002.
