Studio portrait of 2243 Private (Pte) Horace Reginald Shepherd, 48th Battalion, of Mount Gambier, SA. A carpenter before enlisting in April 1916, Pte Shepherd left Australia for England in August 1916, arring in France for service on the Western Front in November 1916. Pte Shepherd was listed as missing after the battalion's attack at Bullecourt on 11 April 1917. Despite attempts by the Red Cross to determine what had happened to him, Pte Shepherd was listed as having been killed in action, aged 27.
