Studio portrait of Second Lieutenant Sydney Bagot Rees, 3rd Pioneer Battalion who was a 42 year old civil engineer from Claremont, Western Australia (born in Adelaide, South Australia) when he enlisted as a Private on 4 January 1916 and was appointed a Second Lieutenant on 26 June 1916. He embarked for overseas with the 6th Reinforcements from Fremantle, Western Australia on 29 December 1916 aboard HMAT Persic. While serving in France he was wounded in action on 6 July 1917 but recovered and returned to his unit within a month. He later suffered badly from bronchitis and was evacuated to England and then returned to Australia with the rank of Lieutenant on 26 November 1918. He was the brother of Sergeant Rowland John Patton Rees [see image P07159.102]. One of 131 photographs displayed on an honour board showing members of the Adelaide Rowing Club who enlisted for active service in the First World War. The original is held by the Adelaide Rowing Club who kindly loaned the board to the Australian War Memorial for copying.
