Pre-war studio portrait of 5090 Private (Pte) George Leonard Ekins, 10th Battalion, of Athleston, SA. An accountant before enlisting in June 1915, Pte Ekins left Australia for England with the 16th Reinforcements in March 1916, and was transferred to the 27th Battalion. Arriving in France for service on the Western Front in December 191e6, Pte Ekins was was promoted to Lance Corporal (LCpl) and was transferred to the 2nd Division Gas Section in March 1917. LCpl Ekins was was evacuated to England suffering from pleurisy in July 1917 and rejoined the 27th Battalion with the rank of Corporal (Cpl) in France in March 1918. In May 1918, Cpl Ekins was attached to the 7th Brigade Headquarters, where he remained for the rest of the war. Cpl Ekins returned to Australia in July 1919 and was discharged from the AIF in November 1919. His portrait appears on a Roll of Honour board of members of the Adelaide Rowing Club who served during the First World War.
