Studio portrait of 4710 Private (Pte) Charles Hauenstein, 23rd Battalion, of Hamilton, Vic., (left) and his brother-in-law. Pte Hauenstein was a carpenter before enlisting on 14 February 1916, and embarked from Melbourne on HMAT Euripides on 4 April 1916 with the 12th Reinforcements. He was killed in action at Villers-Bretonneux on 3 May 1917 at the age of 29.
