History / Summary

Turned wooden bowl, possibly of teak, made from wooden fittings salvaged from HMAS Sydney (I) in the 1930s. The decoration has been made using a electric pyrographic hot wire wood etching machine and colouring applied using the heated benzoline fume method, employing water based paints. Numerous souvenirs - from fruit and nut bowls, ash trays, match holders, tobacco jars and paperweights to specially framed prints of the HMAS Sydney - were fashioned from teak and other wood fittings salvaged from the Sydney before the ship was broken up in 1929. Purchased by the Breaden family during the 1930s.
