Studio portrait of 7281 Sergeant (Sgt) Charles King Brothers, 6th Field Company Engineers, of Orange, NSW. A draper prior to enlistment, he had previously served for four years with the Citizens Military Forces, attaining the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. Sgt Brothers embarked from Sydney with the 5th Reinforcements aboard HMAT Star of Victoria on 31 March 1916. Later transferring to the 5th Field Company Engineers, Sgt Brothers died of wounds at Bullecourt, France, on 22 April 1917, aged 19 years. He was one of over 50 descendants of Phillip Gidley King, Third Governor of NSW, to serve in the First World War.
