Description

Studio portrait, cut to fit a locket, of 2234 Corporal John Tomich MM, 27th Battalion, of Port Pirie, SA. A blacksmith before enlisting on 2 June 1915, Pte Tomich embarked as a Private from Adelaide with the 4th Reinforcements on 21 September 1915. On 7 July 1916 he was wounded in the thigh and was evacuated to England. He rejoined his unit on 4 February 1917. On 6 October 1917 he was promoted to Corporal. He was awarded the Military Medal on 12 December 1917 for his actions on 20 and 21 September 1917, when he 'displayed great courage and devotion to duty' as a stretcher bearer at Westhoek. He was killed in action on 29 August 1918 in France, at the age of 24.
