Description
Small rectangular piece of doped aircraft fabric. Handwritten on the reverse is 'FROM FRANCE 13/4/17 THIS IS OFF THE WING OF A.PLANE THAT CAME DOWN LAST Sunday SAM'.
History / Summary
Piece of annotated aircraft fabric sent back to Australia by 2727 Private S A Powell, 30 Battalion AIF. Born at Harden, NSW in 1890, Samuel Augustus Powell was working in Sydney as a carpenter when he enlisted in the AIF on 24 January 1916. He embarked aboard HMAT Nestor at Sydney on 9 April 1916 with the 5th Reinforcements to 30 Battalion. In early April 1917 Private Powell was at Bapaume in France. Powell was wounded on 29 September 1918 with a gun shot wound to his left hand at Bellicourt. Powell returned to Australia in June 1919.
