A well sinker prior to enlistment he embarked with the 2nd Reinforcements on HMAT Kyarra (A55) on 3 January 1916. He died of sickness on 5 December 1916, aged 30 years. On 27 November 1916 he had been recommend for the Military Medal for unspecified gallantry at Guedecourt but died before it was approved.
