British dixie lid : Lone Pine, Gallipoli
Oval, British army issue dixie lid. The rim is folded over a 3 mm wide length of wire around the entire edge of the lid. The wire is exposed on each of the longer sides, to which heavy gauge wire handles are attached. The lid has shell damage, including one large hole, and several small shrapnel or bullet holes. One section of the edge has been damaged and the wire beneath it bent. Heavily corroded.
This British dixie lid was one of the items found scattered over the Lone Pine position on 8 January 1919 by members of the Australian War Records Section (AWRS). The small party of AWRS staff, led by Lieutenant William Hopkin James, worked on Gallipoli between December 1918 and March 1919, taking photographs and collecting items for the national collection. A dixie is a large cooking pot, or camp kettle.
