Studio portrait of 4829 Acting Sergeant (A/Sgt) Richard William Laws, 9th Battalion, of Warwick, Qld. A plumber before enlisting on 9 October 1915, he embarked from Brisbane on HMAT Commonwealth on 28 March 1916 as a Private with the 15th Reinforcements. He was appointed Acting Sergeant on 25 October 1915, and reverted to the ranks on 16 October 1916. He was killed in action in France on 23 August 1918 at the age of 23.
