Description
Studio portrait of three signallers from the 1st Battalion. Identified in the centre is 5791 Private (Pte) Charles Arthur Baker from Crows Nest, NSW. A British-born migrant, Pte Baker had only been in Australia for three years before enlisting in the AIF in January 1916, and left Australia for England with the 18th Reinforcements in June 1916. Pte Baker was in France for five months before being severely wounded in the legs at Doignies on 2 April 1917. Evacuated to the 3rd Casualty Clearing Station at Pozieres, he died of his wounds six days later, aged 24.
