Description
Studio portrait of 496 Private (Pte) Victor (Vic) Gordon Ross Brown, 19th Battalion, of Narrabri, NSW. A carpenter before enlisting in March 1915, Pte Brown left Australia in June 1915 as an original member of the 19th Battalion for service on Gallipoli and later the Western Front. Promoted in July 1917, Corporal (Cpl) Brown was on a ration party at a supply dump near the village of Zonnebeke on 7 October 1917 when a German shell landed nearby, killing him instantly, age 20. He was buried in a shell hole, but his grave was not marked with a cross and his remains were never recovered.
