Description

A large crowd of onlookers applaud the ship's company of HMAS Sydney II during a ceremonial welcome home march past the Cenotaph in Martin Place. The march is being lead by Captain John Collins. Later the crew enjoyed a luncheon in Sydney Town Hall. The ship had returned from a successful campaign in the Mediterranean. On 19 November 1941 the Sydney was sunk in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Western Australia by the German auxiliary cruiser Kormoran. All 645 personnel on board HMAS Sydney were lost.
