Informal portrait of Lieutenant (Lt) Thomas Giles Paul, 6th Battalion, of Melbourne, Vic, on horseback. Formerly of Surrey, England and a theology student prior to enlisting as a private in August 1914, Paul embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT Hororata (A20) on 19 October 1914. Following service at Gallipoli he was transferred to the Australian Army Medical Corps attached to his battalion. In March 1916 he arrived in France for service on the Western Front and was promoted to Lieutenant in July. In October 1918 he was promoted to the rank of Captain (Capt) and in January 1919 was awarded the Military Cross (MC). In 1919 Capt Paul was granted leave to continue his studies at Milton College, Oxford. Capt Paul MC, returned to Australia in 1920.
