History / Summary
Presented to Able Seaman Driver B Whyte, Royal Australian Navy Bridging Train (RANBT) for his service during the First World War. Born in Melbourne in 1890, Bertie Whyte was working as a horseman when he enlisted in the RANBT on 20 May 1915. 261 Able Seaman Driver B Whyte embarked aboard HMAT Port Macquarie in Melbourne on 4 June 1915 with the RANBT and served with that unit at Lemnos, Suvla and in Egypt. On 12 March 1916 he was transferred to the AIF and served with 2 Pioneer Battalion. He embarked for France on 19 March. In September 1916 he received a stab wound to his leg, although he was not on duty at the time. He returned to Australia in March 1918.
