Description

Outdoor portrait of two men outside a tent. The original caption reads “Captain Harper pays out the filuce to Trooper Lorry Corbett.” ‘Filuce’ probably means ‘filthy lucre’ another term for ‘dirty money’ or cash. Captain Harper is believed to be Harold White Harper, a 21 year old farmer from Perth, Western Australia prior to enlisting on 5 November 1914. He embarked for overseas as a Sergeant (service number 216) with B Squadron, 10th Light Horse Regiment from Fremantle, Western Australia on 17 February 1915 aboard HMAT Mashobra (A47). After serving at Gallipoli, he went on to serve in the Middle East where he was commissioned as an officer and wounded in action on two separate occasions. He returned to Australia on 17 August 1919 as a Major with the 4th Light Horse Machine Gun Squadron and had been Mentioned in Despatches (MID). Lorry Corbett is believed to be 2175 Driver Laurence James Corbett from Broomehill, Western Australia who was a 19 year old farmer prior to enlisting on 6 January 1916. After embarking for overseas with the 15th Reinforcements of the 10th Light Horse Regiment from Fremantle on 1 April 1916 aboard HMAT Ulysses (A38), he served in the Middle East. Driver Corbett returned to Australia on 13 February 1920 as a Squadron Quarter Master Sergeant (SQMS) with the 3rd Machine Gun Squadron.
