Description

Group portrait of members of the 135th Assault Helicopter Company (135th AHC), United States Army, and the 2nd Contingent, RAN Helicopter Flight Vietnam (RANHFV), standing next to an Iroquois helicopter, possibly at Bearcat Base. Left to right: Warrant Officer Class 1 (WO1) Steven Louis Martin, 135th AHC; Captain (Capt) Dennis Michael Phillips, 135th AHC; WO1 Robert (Bob) Enders, 135th AHC; R59629 Leading Airman Aircrewman (LACM) Noel Ervin Shipp, RANHFV; and Dave Farmer, 135th AHC. RANHFV is serving with the 135th AHC, providing tactical airlift and gunship support for Australian and allied ground forces. LACM Shipp was killed in action during gunship operations on 31 May 1969. He was a door gunner on an Iroquois gunship which was shot down by enemy fire at a landing zone (LZ). LACM Shipp's fellow 135th AHC crew members, Specialist 4 Byron Bill Bowden, WO1 Martin and Capt Phillips were also killed. Dave Farmer was rostered as a crew member that day, but could not fly because of a dental problem. WO1 Enders was a crew member in another helicopter in the flight and witnessed the crash.
