Khedive's Star (1884-1886) : Private B Tucker, New South Wales Infantry
Khedive's Bronze Star (1884-1886). Unnamed as issued. Obverse: In the centre is the Sphinx with the three Great Pyramids in the background. Around this is a raised band, on the upper part of which is embossed 'EGYPT' followed by the dates '1884-6'. The lower part of the band is embossed in Arabic 'KHEDIVE OF EGYPT' with the appropriate date. Reverse: The Khedive's monogram 'T.M.' surmounted by a crown within a raised band. The suspender is a small fixed loop attached between the two uppermost rays of the star. A loose ring is attached to the loop joining a straight laureated bar bearing a crescent moon and a small five pointed star. A small piece of 39 mm plain dark blue ribbon is attached to the suspender bar.
Awarded to 283 Private Barff Tucker for his service with A Company, Infantry, of the New South Wales Contingent sent to the Sudan in 1885. Tucker was born in Bathurst in 1861 and had already served with the 3rd Regiment New South Wales Volunteer Infantry, which was based at Bathurst. On enlistment he stated that he was a carpenter, 23 years old and single. He was also an enthusiastic footballer and the members of his club presented him with a gold ring on his departure for The Sudan. Tucker was presented with his Egypt Medal at a parade for the Sudan veterans held in Sydney in February 1886 but the Khedive's Stars were not presented to members of the contingent until 1888. After his service he returned to live in Bathurst and later joined the Prisons Department, working at Bathurst Gaol. He died in 1951, aged 90.
