Description

Green rubberised fabric satchel with top flap and cotton fastening tie. The satchel contains a pair of Elastoplast adhesive dressings and a triangular cotton bandage. Also enclosed is a rectangular tin which contains two glass vials marked 'MONOJECT 1/4gr INJECTION OF MORPHINE'. With the satchel is a folded strip of green canvas with loops to hold aluminium vials and tins. Stitched to the facing side of the canvas is a printed label reading: 'DIRECTIONS FOR USE 1. SULFA-MEZ. These tablets should be given with PLENTY of WATER if possible. If WOUNDED. Give 4 tablets and a good drink of water - 2 hours later 2 tablets. Then 1 tablet every 4 hours for 4 days. If WOUNDED IN BELLY. Do NOT give these tablets. GIVE WATER IN SIPS ONLY - Use MORPHINE AMPOULE SYRINGE. For DYSENTERY OR DIAERHOEA. Give 2 tablets (and water) 4 times a day, for three days. 2. MORPHINE AMPOULE SYRINGE Use for PAIN if WOUNDED. DO NOT LET NEEDLE TOUCH ANYTHING EXCEPT THE SKIN AT POINT OF PUNCTURE. 3. APCOD TABLETS Useful for ACHES - Headache, Toothache, Neuralgia, etc. Try one; if not enough, use a second and if need be, a third. Useful also for sore throat and cold in head if sucked. 4. ANTISEPTIC PEN For Cuts, Chafes, Blisters, Insect Bites. Cover afterwards with Elastoplast Dressing if necessary. 5. STYPTIC PENCIL. Apply to Leech Bites to stop bleeding. DO NOT PULL A LEECH OFF, LET IT DROP OFF. 6. CONSTIPATION Take 1 or 2 Aperint tablets.' Each of the four aluminium tubes is stamped with a Broad Arrow, and three with titles. One reads 'APCOD TAB. CODEINE. CO.', two others read 'SULFA-MEZ SULPHAMEZATHINE'. A flat aluminium tin has a Broad Arrow and the raised words: 'ANTISEPTIC PEN BLADE, STYPTIC, APEREINT' on the lid. Within the tin are two aluminium tubes, one impressed 'APEREINT TABLET C', the other 'STYPTIC PENCIL'. Also in the tin is a glass vial with a screw cap and a label which reads: 'Antiseptic Pen Remove plug before using Contains: 'Merthiolate' Tincture (1 in 1000) 40 min. (approx.).'

History / Summary

'J-Pack' (Jungle medical pack) carried by 424414 Major Richard Murison of 1 Battalion, the Gordon Highlanders, on operations in Malaya and Borneo between 1953 and 1965. Murison served as commander of 12 Platoon, D Company, during the Gordon Highlanders' operational tour of Malaya in the Emergency, 1953-54. In 1965, he served as officer commanding D Company, when the unit was engaged in covert 'Claret' operations in Sarawak during the Confrontation with Indonesia. Major Murison also saw service in Cyprus, and later emigrated to Australia, where he joined the Australian Army with the service number 314656, retiring in 1986.
