Damaged water bottle : Lone Pine, Gallipoli
Damaged blue enamelled metal water bottle. The neck has been torn off, the enamel has chipped off around the damage and the metal has rusted. Enamel has also chipped off around a shrapnel hole on the side.
The remains of this water bottle were found on 6 March 1919 by the Australian Historical Mission at Lone Pine. The Mission, led by Official Historian C E W Bean, visited Gallipoli in February and March 1919 to collect items for the nation, to record the area through artworks and photographs, and to explore the battlefields to answer some of the 'riddles of Anzac' for the Australian official history of the war.
The water bottle belonged to one of the Australian soldiers who had penetrated furthest into Turkish territory during the attack on Lone Pine on 6 August 1915. The Turks later recaptured the position.
