Description
A sapper from 1 Field Squadron, Royal Australian Engineers (RAE), emerges from the entrance to a Viet Cong bunker which is well supported and protected by a revetment of logs. One of the so-called tunnel rats, he has lain down an explosive charge inside the bunker and attached the cord lying on the ground beside him to the charge so that he can detonate it remotely and destroy the bunker. It is one of a complex of bunkers that was discovered by A Company, 8RAR, in dense jungle during Operation Atherton, a reconnaissance and ambush operation in the northwest of the province and the battalion's first in Vietnam.
