Home movies relating to the service of 3788598 Private (Pte) Robert Kingsley Bruce, 85 Transport Platoon, Royal Australian Army Service Corps (RAASC), Vietnam 1967-1968. Films taken on a super 8 movie camera when on duty in South Vietnam between April 1967 and January 1968 with 85 Transport Platoon RAASC. Bruce later wrote: "I was in the advance party that went to South Vietnam to set up camp for the rest who arrived 15 April 1967. New huts at Vung Tau 1st Logistic Support Group (1 ALSG) sand bagging around huts - wash stands. Original living tents prior to hut construction. Shower block overlooking the South China Sea. Iroquois gunship. Looking over the South China Sea 1 ALSG. US ammunition dump at Vung Tau preparing to load artillery shells for delivery to 161 New Zealand Battery. The New Zealanders had no transport unit. 105mm Howitzer thirty shell pallet. The look out tower for the artillery depot. US Peddybone forklift truck operated by US personnel. Loading 85 Tpt Pl International MkIII trucks. The US PX and recreation Centre Vung Tau. US two story huts. US heavy equipment. On hill right of frame showing communication dishes at Vung Tau. US Base. A bridge blown up on tributary of the Mekong River between Vung Tau and Nui Dat. New earth bridge under construction not completed by 8 January 1968. road to Nui Dat driving right hand vehicles on right hand side of the road. Local travelers being passed by daily convoy transporting ammunition. Rice paddies. ARVN base look out tower and bridge guard. ARVN guard post. Second set of bridges over Mekong tributary. Stage where the comedian Bob Hope performed. South Vietnamese traffic control police known as the white Mice. Shot gun riding, standing on the seat through the roof carrying a F1 sub machine gun. Local police (White Mice). South Vietnamese Army depot. The village of Hoa Long. School built by the Australian Government. Hoa Long market. The wealthier part of the town (tiled roof). Approaching australian Task Force at Nui Dat. Destination of Convoy 161 Field Battery RNZA. 105 Howitzers. Dugouts and ammo stores- note helmets on top of sand bags. Unloading ammunition. Entering the village of Baria (Phuoc Le). 85 Tpt Pl and RNZA unloading ammunition (unsafe work practices). Arriving at 7RAR. 7RAR lines. M113 Armoured Personnel Carrier. Red Cross and Salvation Army Welfare. Small International Tippers better known as Tipping teaspoons. 85 Tpt Platoon had a small number of these 2 X Mk III in the background. 85 Tpt Platoon personnel. Bell Reconnaissance helicopter coming into refuel at jumbo long flat fuel tank. Air strip looking toward the hard stand 7RAR on the left of the road. M113 APC and helicopter. Fire Support Base Coral. Reconnaissance Bell 47G helicopter and Fire Support Base Coral. French owned rubber plantation. Rubber plantation processing workers. Plantation office Gallia had its' own air strip which was not available to Australian Forces. Caribou landing at Nui Dat with the Long Hai mountains in the background. Cessna O1 Bird Dog forward Aircraft Controller (FAC) aircraft. Airstrip at Nui Dat. US 155mm Self Propelled Gun - this were often bought up to the air strip at Nui Dat for extra range. Minefield around the base at Nui Dat. US naval base at Vung Tau. US troops arriving in country (it was believed that they had only ten weeks basic training). US landing barge. Robert Bruce backing truck onto the barge to take timber to Nui Dat. The load was too wide and heavy to go by road. Looking back towards US Naval base. Travelling along tributary of the Mekong River. Catholic church in background at Vung Tau. US transportation barge. US naval patrol boat. Identical type landing barge. Vietnamese fishing village north of Vung Tau. US naval maintenance base. New Badcoe Club. Robert Bruce having a beer with mates".
