An Australian driver (left) and New Zealand gunners from 161 Battery, Royal New Zealand Artillery ...
An Australian driver (left) and New Zealand gunners from 161 Battery, Royal New Zealand Artillery (RNZA), unloading ammunition tubes from the back of an International Mk III 4x4 GS two and a half ton truck in preparation for Operation Ingham. Identified from left: Unidentified Australian driver; New Zealander, Bombardier (Bdr) David (Dave) Maxwell; New Zealander, Lance Bombardier Llew Hubbard (back to camera). The New Zealand soldier standing between the gun trails (right) is Gun Sergeant Bob Wirihana. The remaining men are unidentified. Bdr Maxwell does not seem impressed with the Australian's unloading technique of throwing tubes containing live ammunition whilst smoking. Each tube contains a 105 mm, high explosive shell (projectile), a set of charges (numbered 1 to 7) and a brass cartridge, which all fit together to make a complete round. Other items have also been unloaded, including .50 calibre ammunition boxes and larger boxes possibly containing tools and other fittings. Note the two different styles of tubes being unloaded. A L5 Pack Howitzer (right) and a Land Rover (background) are also visible.
