Resistance box: Lieutenant C C Riddell, 4th Field Company, Royal Australian Engineers, AIF
Resistance box with removable wooden lid. The base has several metal points, eighteen of which have a black bakelite top. The lid has a fold down black metal handle. On the side of the lid is painted in black 'LIEUT C RIDDELL'.
This resistance box was used by Lieutenant Censtett Carre Riddell, 4th Field Company, Royal Australian Engineers at Gallipoli in 1915.
Resistance boxes were used to test wires laid at Lone Pine, Johnstone’s Jolly and Steele’s Post. The wires were used to set off explosive as the peninsula was evacuated.
Riddell was mentioned in despatches for his work on 10 December 1915 in the preparation of mines and his leadership of the rear parties of Engineers.
He was later awarded the Distinguished Service Order on 25 August 1917 for reconnaissance work near Messines on 7 and 8 June 1917. He returned to Australia on 9 October 1918.
