Air raid warden's helmet : R E L Phillips
Description
Black painted steel air raid warden's helmet with white painted 'W' at centre front and centre rear. Complete with rubber and vinyl interior liner with webbing chin strap and brass buckle. Painted in white under the brim in a decorative style is 'PHILLIPS'.
History / Summary
Associated with the voluntary wartime service of Richard Phillips, who was an air raid warden for the Braddon and Reid areas of Canberra during the Second World War.
Phillips was born in England on 11 November 1900. He enlisted for service with the 4th Middlesex Regiment at the age of 18 on 22 May 1919. He served with his Regiment in England and was also deployed to Egypt. After taking his discharge from the British Army on 26 July 1922, he immigrated to Australia later in the year.
